rear end noise

I have a metallic noise coming from the rear end when using the gas pedal to accelerate or keep a constant speed, but it goes away when I let up off of the pedal and coast. Is that my differential, or could it be something else? Also, how can I tell what size my differential is from the ID tag bolted to it?

I doubt that it's the diff. A metallic sound from the rear sounds like brakes to me. I've also seen u-joints do similiar things.

The tag on your differential has numbers stamped on it. 3.31, 3.73, etc. Those numbers are telling you your gear ratio.

Check the "yoke" and see if there is any play "rotational". If the splines are worn and you accelerate from a stand still their will be slack in the drive line giving the appearance of a bad rearend. The yoke is a one piece design, if you have a "slipe yoke" it will be a two piece design. It comes out of the end of the transfer case.
