I just resolved this problem with my 1996 PSD. I was messing around with the door courtesy lights and blew the fuse (position 18 I think) that supplies power to the interior cab lights and spedometer. I replaced the fuse a everything went back to normal. My truck was doing exactly what yours is.

My 96 F250 Supercab (97K miles) had the OD switch flashing yesterday and the tranny went into very hard firm shifts but no slipping. I replaced the VSS in the diff. (the OEM sensor was hard to get out and it looked burnt and shiny) The replacement I got at Advance Auto BWD #S8319 for $24.00 was the same design but all plastic covered as the OEM one was metal on the bottom that went into the diff hole. After letting my batteries sit unhooked for about a hour I plugged everything up and went for a city/highway drive. It shifted perfectly and the blinking light was gone; as a matter of fact the shifts were GREAT; so smooth and accurate with the RPM's. This sensor had to be going out for awhile and just slowly went south. I would have plugged in my code reader but I can't get a hold of the buddy I let use it last so I threw $24 at it hoping this would clear it up but not before jumping on FORD-TRUCKS and searching past posts. You guys have helped me once again!!
