Dual Wheels

I bought 4 Ford 1986 1 ton dual wheels, they where cheap, and i was thinking about putting them on my 1985 Ford F250HD 4x4 Diesel SRW, but i went to see if they would fit, they dont fit at all, the wheel would hit the leaf springs. What could i do?

Dually wheels have much greater offset than those for SRW. Only way I know to get something out of them is sell or trade for the ones you need.

You could either swap in a dually axle, or get dually spacers.

im glade to see someone post this thread. i got and 86 f250 hd 4x4 with the 10.25 full floating rear and i was thinking of putting dualls on the rear. i found some rims at the junk yard cheap but when i tried them on a rear end like mine in the junk yard the center holes was not as big as my rear. so i didnt get them and wasnt sure of what i would need to do.

zigz........if you're changin the rear, watch the width of what you buy. from what i understand there are two diff. widths. the true factory dually pick-up has a wider assy. than say a flat-bed. i've seen pick-ups using duals with just a 2 or 3 in. flare and then some have to use big honkin fenders (like my dually) with the inner wells recessed (dually beds are also different from reg. beds). spacers will give you a chezzy look as far as you hubs go. the bigger the space, the less you will see of the hub. if you use spacers, you really should change the length of your studs. you don't want to have just a couple of threads to get your lugs on. have you ever though about changing the rear end and bed together, sounds like you want a dually anyway.

can't you get away with changing the brake drums
on the full floating rearend.going with dually drums
instead of single drums. the rears should be the same
i'm no expert though

i'm like 86big, no expert, but i have had every nut and bolt undun on my dana 70 (dually). wouldn't it be the hubs that places the wheels at a certain width? like the wheels, the drums are sandwitched between the hubs and the lugs, just that the drums don't come off as easy as the wheels. are the hub/drum assy. interchangable from single to dual maybe?

the drums are held on the spindel assembly on the rearend with bearings and seals, and the axel just slides into the spindel and bolts to the break drum

Yes, the front hubs will need to be changed if you want to use dually wheels on the front. Not sure but, you may need to change out rotors and disk brake assys., too. I fear the results are not worth the expense and effort.

86bigred........do ya have one those rears around? ya really do need to take another look. the axles bolt to the hubs. hubs are mated to the drums by means of the studs, hubs slip onto the spindles and are secured w/ hub nut and locking wedge. hubs carry the weight, axles drive the hubs. the drums only purpose is to brake the truck. if i had my scanner, i would post ya an exploded view from dana. about a year ago i had to do a lot of work on mine. took me forever, it was a real basket case.

zig......sorry bout all the talk bout rear ends. answering your question.....yes there are adapters made to allow you run the dually wheels. i don't know if the spacers you guys are talkin bout are the acual adapters but the problem is that they bury your hubs and it looks funny. so you'll end up wanting to use hubcaps, and hubcaps are for chicks, you won't find them on my trucks. and also there are adaptors made for the front to allow you to run the dual style wheels up there too. 3/4 ton or 1 ton, adaptors available for all. if your wheels are lugcentric you can also use dodge wheels. slight difference in hub hole (can't really notice it) but ya can't use the ford wheels on the dodge. look around, they are defintly a specialty item, but they are available.

On my '83 F350 Dually with Dana 70 rear axle the rear brake drums are attached to the rear sides of the hub flanges by pressed in lugs. You have to remove the axles first, then the axle nuts, the outer bearings and then the hub/brake drum assys. Then you have to press out the lugs to separate the drums from the hub flanges.
