I just help a guy in the neighborhood clear out an FE from his garage for $75.00. It is supposedly a 390, and a quick but crude stroke check came up close. Tell me if the flywheel end has a half moon cut into it and then a bolt hole over, a square notch. I figured that if anything, it's always good to have a parts motor (or one to build while enjoying the toys).
Hi Mike, we have gone around on this issue a lot and have determined that you can't positively ID the crank by the presence of a half-moon or notch or both. Some years it's true but others not. Best way is by measuring the stroke. Here are some numbers:
I agree with Barry, the stroke is the best way to check. The 390's that I have all have a square notch and a hole in the flywheel flange. My 360 cranks all have a half moon and square notch.
Thanks all!!!! I am pretty sure that I did the stroke test correct and came up around 3 3/4 of an inch of travel. You know how it is with a clothes hanger and marker in the dark though... I really enjoy these boards, plenty of info and humor all mixed in one. No matter on how fast it comes, there is always time. I have found that when working on the older toys, slow and steady usually wins out or pays off in the end.
