a few 460 ?s

okay, i have a 69 (not sure where to find the vin on the block, but its awful oily above the starter) 460 out of a lincoln. this engine is getting rebuilt before it goes in my truck. so...what could i do to wake it up? how well does the stock intake work? how big of a carb can/should i go with (currently have a 770 double pumper)? what would be a good cam for lots of low-end power and quick throttle response? i saw a lunati voodoo cam in a jegs catalogue, i think it said the power band was idle-5000 and it was about $195. i might go with this one, but does anyone have any other suggestions?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...MEWA:IT&ih=016

finally, i found a stroker crank on ebay...i have heard some horror stories about stroker kits from ebay and was wondering if this place checks out okay (short of actually buying one). and if i were to buy a crank from these guys, what else will i need to buy/do? i know i will need rods, but will i need pistons too? so, what would some of you guys go with? if i were to buy a crank from these guys, i am opting for the 533 crank...but i might go bigger.

so now, let the opinions roll in!

yes youll need pistons too unless you want your pistons ramming themselves into your heads. odds are you wont be able to get your block to go the overbore it would take to get to 533, but it will easily make a 521 with the 4.3" stroke and .030 overbore, or for a bit more money on balancing you could get a 4.5" stroke .030 overbore and have a 545. the 4.3" stroke with 6.8" rods or the 4.5" stroke with 6.7" rods use the same shelf pistons.

ahh, okay. 521 sounds meaner rolling off the tongue anyway. so that ad was a bit misleading. i think 545 is a bit too big. maybe i'll go that route tho...will i have to grind on the block at all to get the crank to clear? and who makes a good set of rods for a reasonable price? i figure on hearing eagle or a name like that. also, what kind of pistons (or what size...sorry, i am a bit ignorant, but thats why im here) should i get?

for a more streetable motor, throw a newer set of pistons in it, intake carb and headers and a 268 or 276 hyd cam and you could clean up the exhaust side, and you have a decent motor. you go stroker, your up in the 6-7 gs and maybe more.

Flat tops work fine.
The originals were eye-browed to accommodate the valves.

You can verify the ID of the engine by the crankshaft numbers

no grinding required up to 4.5" stroke. it bolts right in as for what kind of pistons id go probe 22cc dish pistons. rods id go scat h-beam- 6.8" for a 521 or 6.7" for a 545. regardless of what you do, get it properly balanced or it wont live very long.

cool, thanks darrin. dont think im goin 545, cool as it sounds. i went to ford nationals at natl. trail raceway this past weekend and picked up a mallory unilite dist. and plug wires along with a coil and hyfire box for about $170. i am wanting to build for lots of low-end torque, doesnt NEED to be streetable but that would be nice. oh, silly question (for a bit later on down the road) but does anyone make a small blower (like a single carb) for a 460? i saw a v-belt driven B&M on a 302 once, looked really neat. and i dont want to dick with a turbo on a carbed engine.

oh, one last thing...does the e-bay crank look good to use, or kinda hokey?

the hawks crank should be fine. just make sure whoever is building the engine knows what machine work to look for on the crank, as alot of the cheap cranks dont have proper machining. also, theres no single carb blower i know of.

i would buy a complete stroker package instead of just the indvidual components. that way you are at least guaranteed that all the parts work togather (as long as the seller isn't a shister). some cranks use BB chev journal diameters, some pisttons and rods use different pin diameters, some stroker cranks need different lenght rods, so unless you really do your homework, you could end up with a lot of parts that don't match.

the main problem with some of the stroker cranks (not saying Hawk, but some of the cheap china cranks) is that they need huge amounts of balancing when mated to the rods and psitons you are going to use. and Mallory balancing lead is very expensive. turns that bargain crank into a huge money pit to get it correctly.

also if you have the early heads (C8, C9 or Dove heads) flat top pistons will easily bring compression up past 11:1. you will need racing gas at those levels to keep the motor in one piece. the early heads have a 75 - 77 cc chamber so check the piston charts for a suitable piston that keeps you around 9.5:1 for pump gas.

the 460 has huge potential and is only limited by how much do you want to spend factor.

good luck

Mike
