i have a 68' w/ a 351w in it. it has an edelbrock carb w/ the off road needles and seats in it. it runs great around town but as soon as i take it off road it won't run. it bogs out at any angle. i found my floats were set wrong and fixed the problem. it helped but i'd drive 15 miles to the ohv park, stop and get out to lock my hubs and when i'd start to go the motor would bog out. i pulled the fuel line to the carb and theres no fuel in it. i cranks for a good 10 seconds and fuel sprayed. i shot some in the carb, fired it up and drove home. thinking my manual fuel pump may but weak and allowing a vapor lock i replaced the pump. it helped the problem but i would still bog out after only a few minutes of off roading. my new manual fuel pump gets so hot i can't even touch it and i noticed my engine compartment was super hot even though my water temp wasn't above 190 so i got a fan shroud from wild horses and put it on. i put a electric fuel pump back by the tank, ran all new fuel line and checked to make sure my gas cap vents and went out to the park. i got a good 30-45 minutes of 4 wheeling inbefore i started to have minor bogging issues. i pulled to flat ground, pulled the air cleaner off and while it was sitting there running is slowed down then quit. i cranked and cranked but it didn't start. i pulled the fuel line off just before the inline filter in the engine compartment and once again it is dry. any ideas?
I would take a look at the fuel pickup inside the tank. Might be something floating around in there causing intermittent blocking.
If you don't find anything there, get a helper to put some low pressure air into the line from the back end and inspect for leaks in case it's sucking in air somewhere. (Not from the front because of the check valves in the pumps.)
There offroad carb is alright, the manifolds and cams are great, comparably.
Lot of things can cause this, the angles can change the amount of fuel in your bowl which can starve or over fill your bowls. Even bouncing can do this.
Bouncing or angels can cause also small fuel bowl spill overs that will dump into the air intake section or venturi will cause bogging.
I dont know Elderbrocks that well, I do know more about Holley, Predator and Barry Grants. But I do know that Elderbrock unlike all the others uses a slosh mesh in there fuel bowls and they do not depend on springs for there float bouncing or long or quick angle changing. once a fuel bowl is overfilling it dumps into the venturi over taking the airflow causing the bog. I dont know about marine elderbrocks but if your dead set on the brand name then that might be the type you want to get. I do feel though there are better offroad carbs.
Holley Truck avenger
Barry Grant (go to the site and fill out the vehicle info and request the offoad kit)
Preadator (call them)
Holly Pro injection has no problems with angles or bouncing, there is nothing in it to cause those problems
Also check your fuel pump, filter, pressure and the pickup tube in the tank. Always do the easy and cheap stuff first
my carb is a 1406. i am definantly not stuck on the brand. as a matter of fact i am growing real tired of all these edelbrock issues. i am going to try to run a carb spacer and if that doesn't help i may swap manifolds and go to a stock 2 barrel. i don't care about monster power, all i care about is trail ability. i appreciate all the input
