I have a 98 f150 4x with 281 motor with a u tranny code. I'm having an issue with the tranny not wanting to shift from 2nd to 3rd. The engine has to wind up to 3000 to 3200 to shift. I have changed the filter to try and correct. I also diconnected the battery. I also had to much fluid in it from the filter change and fix that. I went to AZ and had the codes read nothing. I also have a BM shift kit.
I know that the filler tube is rusted out and leaked fluid filling at the filter change. I also forgot it in second and wind up it to 3500 cause I shifted and missed drive and went into second.
Any helpfull suggestions ? Thanks
try replaceing the 2-3 shift accumulator that is underneith the valve body. if it isnt sealing properly the fluid cant get to the third gear clutch until higher rpms
I went to install the 2 & 3 shift accumlator into the tranny today and the round wire spring was in three pieces . I measured the spring and it's got a .125 wire diameter x .600 id x .835 od x 1.875 approx in length with ground flat ends and radius ends. Broke in the middle and I think thats fatigue end of life and not heat treatment. If it broke on the ends it would be heat treatment from what I recall. I got a 156 k miles on this truck. I checked the bore of the piston and did not see any damage. The piston seal was cut.
Any body ever replaced this spring ? Got a approx cost ?
I'm going to replace the first and piston and its spring. That one has a .140 wire diameter and .785 i.d. , 1.08 o.d. and a 1.875 length with ground flat ends.
Anything else you can think to replace or do while its down?
i havnt seen the 2-3 spring break yet.are you talking about the piston that is at the passenger side rear of the trans or the drivers front side.the on on the driver side is common to breakage, this usually causes harsh 1-2 shifts.the springs are around 10 - 20 dollars.the piston that will cause a int. 2-3 shift is under the valve body and is held in place by a retainer that just holds the spring and piston in place
