Whats up with all these fire incidents? Using cheap no name PSUs I guess. A good power supply will automatically shutdown if it gets to hot, same with any reasonably modern computer.
thats not true.. the one that caught on fire of mine was almost 200$ it was a antec, i built all my own computers.. if you want a cheap power supply buy a pre manufactured computer like a dell or hp or what ever otehr brand name.. they put the real crap in them.

Weird. I have a $100 Antec True Power, even it has tested and functional over-heat shutdown. Not sure about HP, but every PSU i've pulled out of a dell has been of impressive quality, using well known OEMs such as PCP&C and Lite-On
You can't guard against electrical surges with any electrical device. Surges fry refrigerators, tv's, driers, etc. Lightning strikes can come in anywhere, telephone, electrical outlets. Heavy line surges from power outages can cause heavy damage.
My computer gets turned off when I am thru using it, but not for safety reasons, it is 7 years old and tends to lock up when left running. I unplug everything except the refrgerator when I am going to be away more than a day or two. I have lost one house with everything in it, and sure don't want to go thru that again. You cease to exist when this happens. jd

The power supply is not always the problem.. My customers motherboard is what fried not the Power supply..
The only time my computer gets turned off is if I'm going to be away for a while or if the power flickers, then the surge protector needs to be reset before it can be turned back on. Otherwise it's always running F@H.
With the laptop I'll turn it off if I know I wont be using it much the next day or two, otherwise it's always in standby if its closed.
In the summertime mine get cut off when not in use. Computers are hot when they run. During the winter time I slightly overclock them and run them 24/7. I fold more in the winter due to processor heat.
Sounds like Donjammer may be a computer pro, if so, he will know this to be true. Any new computer component such as a hard drive, memory, power supply, monitor, etc. regardless the cost or quality has the possibility of failure and it is the highest in the first 6 months of use. If they are faulty or defective from the manufacturer that period is the most likely for failure. After that they have a better chance of long, reliable service but this is speaking in very general terms. there are exceptions to everything.
I personally turn off my computers and printers when I'm not using them mainly to conserve electricity. When I had my own business, home office, I had two computers and three printers running nearly all the time, not to mention a phone system, answering machine, fax machine, lights and fans. My electricity bill was over $200 per month!
I also turn off my DSL modem when I'm not using it because that's the best firewall hands down ever! I've experienced an intranet system being hacked and secretly used without detection for months, all because the DSL modem was left on contrary to my suggestion to turn it off at night when not in use. One of the workstations (all were typically left running) opened a port to synchronizer time I believe. Server and router logs showed activity over the months of someone working their way into the system.
Long story longer ...... when we discovered this we found that the server's disc partitions had been changed and there was a phantom partition not visible to the system. Also the system had been changed. Every time we changed it back to what it was originally it would mysteriously change back again!
We removed the hard drive and brought it home for inspection. As soon as we plugged it into a testing tower it did a hard crash. We surmised that whomever hacked in and rearranged the system did not want to be discovered.
.... So, I turn off my puters and DSL modem when not in use and I never run a puter or wireless router without security in place.
My computer at work is on all the time. In fact, we are not allowed to turn them off. I only work at the office for 2 hours a day, but my 'puter is on for the other 22 hours!
My two personal computers, (a desktop, and my laptop), are on for no more than 24 hours. We sometimes leave them on to recieve updates and such. I hate booting and getting up-date notices. I want to go right to work.
But my laptop is often with me, and hooked to sat. internet, or wifi. I think it is almost never shut off. But re-started often!
My gaming machine is turned off whenever not in use, its a home built unit with a asus motherboard and a over clocked core 2 duo processor. It has 8 high output cooling fans, and it sounds like a jet engine at take off when the machine is running. It sits unused until the weekend when my buddy brings his machine over and we kick some butt in halo. I sold my gaming machine to him when i needed money about 6 months ago, and he sold it back to me for a forth of the cost when he got a new one a month or so ago.
My primary computer is a Dell Insperion, its turned on in the morning and turned off at night.
I've got a real old IBM 300PL that I use as a server, its been turned on about a year. I have a couple cooling fans wire tied to the vents in the case. Shes a old office machine that was built to run non stop forever, I have a utility called asus probe installed, its been set to shut down at 130 degrees, so far its lucky to manage 3/4 of that. This machine sits at idle in my hallway closet, along with our modem, router, and a mess of wires.
I have quite a few different machines in my basement work area. I like to drag home computers I find on junk day and mess with them. Most of the time I'll have enough parts to make them work again. If it ends up being something i have no use for them I'll sell it at a garage sale.

A business PC is different, because they need to be running to allow administrators to push updates to the users on off hours. If the pc's were not on the admins would need to manually update each pc.
Plus others may be using the machine when you are not there..
