I have a 5.0L 1996 4x4 f150 and I have no idea if I have "mass air"...I am looking for a cold air intake and found some but I need to know if I have mass air or not..what is it??

There are two types of intake systems for these trucks: mass air flow and speed density. Speed density adjusts your fuel/air ratio based on a table programmed into the computer, whereas the mass air flow is able to calibrate f/a ratio automatically through use of a mass air sensor which is located between your air filter and your throttle body, mounted right near the air filter.

Your truck is mass air if your air filter exits into a single tube (with a sensor) which splits into 2 tubes before it enters the throttle body. The speed density system has 2 separate tubes running all the way from the throttle body into 2 separate outlets on the air filter, and there is no mass air sensor to be found anywhere. Heres are some pictures of my engine which is MAF:

Granted, my setup is not stock, it has a K&N fuel injection performance kit, but you can see 1-2 split tube and the grey MAF sensor next to the filter. Hope that helps! Here's a closeup of the MAF sensor:

Dude, that is what I call some serious engine clutter!! That can't be much fun to work around.

Nah, it ain't too bad. I consider myself lucky, compared to my brother's 7.3L psd. you couldn't squeeze a SODA CAN in that engine compartment.

Plus I just freed up quite a bit of space on the front side of the engine by switching to an e-fan

Hmmm, I guess I am just not used to seeing that much stuff going everywhere. I am used to seeing a set up with no AC, no t-mactor, no power steering, no washer fluid container, no evap, no vacuum canistors (just the round one is intact for brakes), no EGR, no cruise control etc. etc. If what you have is nothing compared to the psd...I woul hate to see what that looks like!

I tried to find a picture in his photo album but he didn't have any full engine pics... Its really crazy man. Take my engine, but add a turbo with the big exhaust ducts going in/out, plus an intercooler with more big ducts, plus about a million more sensors (the 7.3L psd is HIGHLY electronic). Damn!!
