Transmission fluid Change

Transmission fluid Change
I was told once by a mechanic to not change my trans fluid with alot of miles on it. The reason I'm asking is I want to do the bts valve body change but I don't want to mess up my trans in the process. I did a fluid change on one of my old gas ford years back and 2 months later it went out. I haven't changed my trans fluid yet in my 2002 psd and it has 112000 miles. So is this a good idea to do the valve body or not. I'm wanting to get this so I can then go with the dp tuner and have smoother shifts. Any advice would be nice.

Well i changed my vb last month and no problems yet. Glad i did cause prior to me chaning my vb the oil looked clean on the dip stick but when i droped the oil it was brown and had a burnt smell to it and some metal shavings on the magnet. If I didn't change my vb I wouldn't have known the condition of the oil and the shavings. My truck only has 60K miles. Hope this helps.

What do you do with your truck? Do you tow a big fiver or TT on a regular basis? If not and you only drive it to work and such you should be fine. I would have it flushed though not just change it, and then drop the pan and do the valve body. I usually have my fluid flushed every 50,000 miles, but it has 70,000 on it now because I haven't had the time. It is going in this week. 50,000 miles is about every 5 monthe for me because I haul freight with it. The key to trans life is to keep the fluid fresh. We have drivers with over 300,000 miles (and one with 480,000) on original 4R100's, and we haul 18,000 lb trailers on a regular basis.

There is a nice DIY Transmission Flush procedure listed on this site under the articles section at the top called "Changing ATF Fluid in a E4OD and 4R100 transmission". Good read if you're thinking of actually flushing all the fluid out and not just draining the pan. I think I'm going to try it next time I change the fluid.
