gas gauge gone nuts...

So I stopped and put about 20 bucks worth of gas in the front tank about 10 minutes ago... 20 bucks worth of (premium) gas is, unfortunatly, about 6 gallons around here, I had burned up 3/4 of the tank prior to filling up... I started the truck back up again and watched to my own amazement as the gauge passed half tank, then full tank, and is now pointing straight over towards the odometer...

Something ain't right, obviously... I switched it to the rear tank and the gauge worked properly... So I'm guessing its not the gauge... Could it be the gas just hasn't settled into the tank or something? Not sure what a float is, but hear thats a pretty good guess too... Any other ideas?

Something must have gotten jacked up with your float, tells the gage how full the tank is. Could be something else, not too sure.

Sounds like a problem with the float, like Nectar said. The float is exactly what you might expect it to be, an apparatus that "floats" on the fuel in the tank and sends a gas level signal to your gauge on the dash. Try standing on the rear bumper and jumping up and down real hard, the float might just be hung up somewhere. I did this once at a gas station, yeah, you're gonna look like a real idiot

Only strange thing is that a hung up float would most likely cause a LOWER gas reading than what is actually in the tank... If stirring up the tank by jumping on the bumper doesn't work (and I don't think it will) I would think you have a problem with the wiring that runs from the float to the gauge on the dash, assuming that it's an electric gauge, which I'm really not sure it is...

Maybe you just found a magical gas pump... Mind giving me the address?

My truck also did this once but it would climb way past full even if it was empty while driving. and while it would be running sitting still it would read properly. I never got around to fixing it and one day it was fine again and has been ever since.
