Ok guys, I just had an alignment today at Les Schaub, well the tech showed me that my balljoints are pretty much gone...drivable but to me they need to go. So the tech quoted me about $450 installed for all four balljoints. Does that price sound right? What did you pay for yours if you had them done?
Check out PowerStrokeShop's Ball Joint Kit If you want to do it yourself. The kit is $248.96 and is way easier then tracking the parts down yourself. Less expensive as well in my case. But to answer your question, $450 seems a lot less then some other places charge... Unless they don't replace the seals and o-rings with new ones. I'd inquire about exactly what they'll do first.
yea I never ever trust les Schaub they ****ed us one to many times and its stupid, they tried to tell me Mine were toast right after I had them done, then tried to tell me that since my pad were worn out I was going to need new roaters, and calipers as well, which was Bs besaue the rotors were new special ones and the calipers were brand new as well.... IMO they will tell you anything they think they can get away with and with me it was when I was younger and driving my Audi so they must have figured I didnt know **** and would try and get me for as much as possible....... sorry for ranting lol but i hate them !!!!! Anyway Id say either buy the parts and DIY or take it to a smaller shop and see what they say first before trusting LS
$450 is not too bad, all depends on the quality of joints they put in. If there are china made $25 joints, then that may be a little high. But you figure that it is at least 2hrs labor per side for a pro (3 or more for you and I!), and at $60/hr. That's $250 for labor alone.
Me... I do my own. There are tons of other things you can check out while you are in there: main bearing, needle bearing, yellow o ring, inner hub seal, dust boot seal, etc. If you do it yourself, you can replace all those parts if needed and still be under $450, and use quality parts. Just plan to set aside a good chunk of a Saturday!

If your ball joints are pretty much gone they should never have done
a alignment without calling you and telling you about the ball joints it's
just a waste of money because you will need a alignment after ball joint's
are replaced. You're allignment probably won't hold and your tires will get
abnormal wear. Just had my ball joint's on one side done 488.00 with
AC-Delco from the shop I use. The other side were tight.
If I could have got that done at that price I might have scooped up the deal! My truck is 4X4, which always costs more, and I was quoted a "deal" of over $900. Stealership? Don't make me laugh. NO way.
I had just bought new tires and tried to have the alignment done. Good timing. They told me they could not do it because the ball joints were too bad. I know a lot of the people that work there, otherwise they may have done to me like they did to you: charge you for an alignment that accomplished nothing.
Get the front wheels off the ground, place your hands under the tire to the inside of the tire, and lift up and towards you on the bottom of the tire. If the ball joints are bad the tire will obviously move. Mine will move, the left one quite a bit.
I printed this out, color pictures and all. My reference material. My dust seals are just hanging on both sides, so i figure I am going to replace everything!! Including buying some Warn hubs.
My advice is that price is less than half what I was quoted at a Michael Tire store here in Louisville. I don't understand the difference in price. I asked around a little and was told about one thousand would be normal. And they would not do it the way I want it. I may paint a few things while it is all apart.
And yes, get the MOOG.
By the way, on a brand new superduty, they still use these sealed bearings. Wouldn't greasable bearings make more sense?
Where is the best place to get MOOG Ball Joints? My Dynatrac Hub conversion just came last week and I would like to replace my Ball Joints while it is taken apart.
