Tips..just looks?

Tips..do they do anything other than add looks?

Considering adding a tip, do larger diameter tips make the exhaust louder?

Does the length matter at all, other than just appearances?

Can a stainless steel tip with inlet size 2.5" be stretched to fit 2.75"?

Why in the hell does Ford use 2.75" piping on the new 07 Expedition?

Tips do nothing but give you a finished look. There are resonator tips that quiet the exhaust (mini mufflers) but most are used for looks only. You can stretch pipe some but if it is chromed it will come off. Use a 3 inch tip and neck it down if you want a tip.

Sorry Mud... I don't agree that tips do nothing. Try doing a search on this. I believe there was a long winded thread about tips a year or so ago. Tips can change the exhaust note. I have 4"x18" SS tips. They did change the tone of the exhaust. I said changed the tone not louder.

I won't disagree with you but I think 99% of your sound comes from other places. I don't personally run tips, just the dual 2.5's behind the right rear tire with 2 turbo type mufflers. They do look cleaner than rusty pipe, so if that is all they do, that is OK.

A tip may alter the tone, but the sound really comes from the rest of the system. They most certainly will not make the exhaust louder.

Ford uses 2.75" pipe because they have determined it the perfect size for the vehicle. 3" results in lower torque and fuel economy at low rpm, and 2.5" restricts the top end too much. 2.75" is a nice compromise to meet the most requirements as cheaply as possible.

unfortunately i can't believe this. I guess ford also decided it would be best if they removed the transmission dipstick. That way they can claim the transmission to be sealed and not allow anyone to check the level of fluid in the transmission. It seems ford is cutting corners just to save a few bucks, of course that is my personal opinion.

The tips may just hollow or deepen the sound a tad overall just make the appearance look way better

I agree with ya.

They claim the dipstick was an entry point for dirt and thats why it was left out. Just stupid in my opinion. I like to check the tranny fluid often.

I guess the oil and power steering fluid dipsticks are next.

With all the cats and gigantic stock mufflers pipe size is of less importance.

thats just the same as the scare tactic wording they put in the manuals for our trucks, they want us to have to return to the dealership for inspections as much as possible. Its more profit with the outrageus amount they charge for simple things. thats why i never go to dealership

I agree, instead of going with an off sized pipe, I think they could get better performance with their 2.5" pipe and a freer flowing muffler instead. I guess they figured the strange sized pipe was better economically.

And on the tranny thing, they like to run those stupid flush machines instead of doing it the old fashioned way. I think those flush machines probably shorten tranny life and force fluid through passages while the system is off, which is not good for it.

I like the gentle flush which is done by removing the return line and letting the engine idle as you add new fluid through the dipstick/fill tube till new clean fluid starts to drain out, which means all the old fluid has been removed. This method to my knowledge extend the tranny life and has never damaged a tranny. But it is really hard to do this when there is no tube.
