95 explorer clunky 2-1 downshift

95 explorer clunky 2-1 downshift
My friend's 95 explorer AT shifts pretty rough and noisy up the gears and downshifting is fine until 2-1. The downshift is accompanied by a pretty violent and loud clunk in the front end. Driving down bumpy roads is pretty loud and clunky too. Any help is appreciated.

Had the same problem on my own about a half year back, and after about 3 months i found out that the entire transmisson would need replacing.
also i still have a small, quiet clunk sometimes when down shifting from 2 to 1
might want to have someone check it out like a good freind or even if the problem presists an auto shop
