Hey guys I am brand new to the forum and I was previouisly a Chevy guy....lol. I just traded in my Chevy silverado 5.7 in for a 2002 F-250 Super Duty Super Cab Short bed 5.4. I love the truck....love the way it drives/looks/rides, but the gas mileage SUX and so does the power compared to my Chevy. My Chevy was also lifted and the only upgrades to the engine were intake and exhaust. I need more power and better gas mileage if possible. What should I do....I figure you guys should know best. Any help will be much appreciated. Also....is there a classified section to sell parts on this website?
For more power, probably the best bang for the buck is gears.
What gearing does it have now?
Of course, the two words "power" and "mileage" are mutually exclusive. You can't get one AND the other. Well, not easily, and certainly not enough to make up for the cost of the modifications with increased gas mileage.
So when people say to get exhaust because it will make my gas mileage better that is a myth? I dont know the gearing....I believe its stock. I want more power but I cant imagine getting worse gas mileage then this. When I say bad gas mileage its just because I am comparing to my last truck and its a pretty big difference.
Oh and where is that classifieds section? I am havin a hard time finding it.

Look up on the top of the page, the links in the gray bar, for the classified section.
The 5.4 and the V-10 are not affected much by gear changes. You probably have a 3.73 differential now. Going to a 4.10 won't impact your highway MPG and may actually help your city and towing MPG.
I dont tow anything and eventually when I will it will only be a small jet boat. I jus drive around town and on the freeways for trips and stuff. There gotta be something. It just doesnt make sence to me that my last truck had a bigger engine and a lift kit with bigger tires and got better gas mileage. Hell this truck even has a snugtop on it which is supossed to give you better mileage and I am trying to get rid of it because I have no use for it....so then the mileage will be even worse i guess....LOL.
the bigger tires will change your gearing and will affect your MPG I personally think you need to take it and have a tune done to it, it will produce more power at a more efficiant rate with the air fuel ratio just tell the tuner what you are trying to do and he should be able to come up with a program to work for you (IF HE IS ANY GOOD)
I dont know what kind of mileage I am getting but its worse then my last truck which was not stock at all which this one is all stock. I plan to go even bigger with this truck and I guess I should just stop bitching about it because thats the price you pay to have a big truck but I guess I am jus tripped out on the difference between a stock truck getting worse gas mileage then a truck which has a little bit of a bigger engine and a lift kit with bigger tires, intake and exhaust. BUT when I talk with some people about it they tell me to get some exhaust and that it will help with the mileage. I am constantly getting mixxed opinions on that matter. Exhaust = more power = more gas
But my last truck had exhaust and got better gas mileage.....kind of makes you wonder. But I am no expert.....thats why I am here asking questions....but it still makes me wonder...haha! I guess I will find out because I will modify it regarless....LOL.
you will not get better mpg from the exhaust...i didnt....also because you will be slamming it down all the time to hear it roar!!lol... also, easy on the go pedal is the best bet for your mpg problem...what kinda truck was you previous one...also the superduty is an extremely heavy vehicle...maybe you arent getting worse mileage, but you have a smaller gas tank? might make it seem like worse mileage if you havent actaully checked it.
I actually think that its a bigger gas tank....LOL! Maybe this truck jus too heavy for the 5.4 engine. I mean they put that engine in the f-150. I was kind of affraid of that from the beginning. Anybody ever think about the power to weight ratio? I do.....anyways my last truck was a 1997 1500 Chevy Silverado 5.7 vortec and that thing hauled ***. This thing is a freakin turtle compared to that truck. Why is the super duty so heavy? The cab is alot bigger but does it really make that much of a difference when it comes to weight or is there another reason?
If you were talking about a 1/2-ton, exhaust and intake would help.
But with the 3/4 and 1-ton, the intake and exhaust aren't restricted for emissions or noise, or at least not as much.
So, there's not much to be gained from there.
Your MPGs will get BETTER in stop-and-go with lower gears. However, you might have trouble keeping your foot out of it Hence, why I said, MPG or power? Pick one.
Well, I don't want to start a flame war between PSD, V10 and 5.4 so don't take this that way. The 5.4 is a great engine but it is a little small for this big truck.
Your last truck was a 1/2 ton and this is a 3/4 ton. Everything on this truck is made to be "beefy" for towing, etc. The 5.4 is smaller than your old 5.7 and the truck is heavier than your old Chevy. The 5.4 has to work harder to move it.
I have seen folks with the 5.4 that have gotten anywhere from 14 all the way up to 18 on the highway and 8 to 13 in town. It depends on your style of driving.
Don't do any mods for MPG gains. The math doesn't add up. The money you will spend on mods could by a lot of gas (even at these high prices). Do mods because you want the mods.
