Hi, I'm running a 4.2V6 in an 07 F150. It came with 5w20, that's what the manual recomends, but I intend to switch to a full synthetic oil. I've never run synthetic oil before, and I was wondering which #'s to look for. 0w30, 5w40, 5w30?
Most big syn makers have a 5W20. I prefer 5W30 syn jus tbecause I think it starts up a little quieter, but could be imagination.
No reason to run anything like xW40 or 50 unless you have an egnine bruning oil in which case syn is probably a waste anyway.
I don't care for 0Wxx since in my experience it does make the engine noisy at startup and there is no real good reason fo it in my opinion unless you live where block heaters are standard equipment.
I'm gonna' give the Pennzoil "Platinum" 5-20 full synthetic (it's got those 'adaptive' molecules, after all ) a try in my '07 5.4, and the wife's Freestyle Duratec V-6 too, starting next oil change.
Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum, Royal Purple has a tendency to shear pretty quickly. I'd also stay with the 5w-20, UOA's show this weight to be a consistent performer.
In case you have engine problems & seeing as how you have a 07 & likely a Warranty to consider, be sure the lube you use, says on the contaner, that it Meets or Exceeds Fords specifications & stay within the owners manual viscosity range call out, for the temps you'll encounter & for the type of driving you'll do, during the OCI, down in hot country AZ.
Texaco & Chevron make good lubes, that should be available in your part of the country, if you don't want to use Motorcrafts full synthetic.
