Question Bad Vibration

My 2003 F-250 4X4 has a vibration I can't pin point. I put it on my hoist and let it idle with the four wheel drive on. When the front wheels are straight it won't do anything. When I crank the wheel left or right the rear end starts to buck and shake. If I let off the steering wheel the shaking stops. I don't understand why turning the steering wheel all the way either direction makes the rear end shake. When I drive on the road (pavement or gravel) I feel the vibration and sounds like a tire rubbing something. It's hard to tell while driving where the vibration is coming from. The vibration isn't constant and stops after about 30-35 mph. It's most noticable when turning. The only thing I think it might be is the limited-slip plates in the rear end are seized together. I was told it's a problem with some trucks. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Tracy

I think you are correct with your thoughts of the friction plates, but it is not from them being siezed. Often times they "Chatter" because they need to be conditioned. After time the conditioner breaks down or the oil just gets old and needs to be replaced. The tighter you turn the truck the faster on tire has to turn than the other, so the problem seems to be worse during a "lock to lock" turn. Simply change the fluid in the diff per manufacturer specs, and purchase a bottle of "Friction modifier" from your ford dealer and you should be set. I have seen some rare cases where one bottle is not enough, but it usually does the trick.
Good luck.
