I don't know why I'm driving my truck wrong but I'm getting 14.3mpg in a '71 F-250 with a 360 and T-18 4-speed. 4.10 gears, too. Maybe I got one o' them high mileage secret carbs or something.
Tuning is critical in attempting mileage gains in these old trucks. I've got a cast 4bbl Ford intake, Holley carb, and electronic ignition, and I get better than 15 mpg. My truck also only weighs 4,100 lbs.
Just keep track of your timing, carb settings, mpg, etc, and change one thing a week. Figure out what your truck likes best and keep at it.

A total of over 922K miles the last 35 years, I record mileage.
The 268 mile one way trips I was taking for years I didn't recall the land shifting closer or farther apart plus a correction added for Mr. Odie as he was 7.3% below the actual mileage.
With literally months of dizzy tuning, running wide band O2 sensors for carb tune, 33" tires with 3.54 gears and not running over 68 mph you can get mileage.
