I just picked up a 1990 F250 with a 5.8 It runs fine at idle, but start driving it and it has no power and it gets worse as it heats up. If you rev it in park it won't rev over 3500rpms, and this also gets worse as it heats up, to the point of stalling.
The previous owner changed the exhaust system including the cat, took it in and it was throwing some codes and that was all repaired including a new MAP sensor, EGR valve and sensor. The place where he took it could not find the problem, which led to him giving up and selling it.
I have since changed the ignition control module and then swapping out the whole distibuter thinking it might be the PIP. I've changed the plugs and fuel filter. The wires, rotor and cap look new. I've also set the timing.
The ECU could be trashed...have you or the PO replaced the TPS by any chance? That could be it as well.but seeing as how it's throwing all those codes...ECU....?
I cranked the engine untill it was at TDC and checked the rotor and it was pointing almost opposite of plug 1. I set it at #1 and the engine would not fire. I set it back to where it shouldn't be and it would fire again.
Could this mean my timing chain is off? If it was, would I be able to get it to run at all?
It is also running very rich.
Thanks for the reply Thunder. Where is the ECU on these Fords? Excuse my ignorance but I haven't had much experience with Fords but have just acquired 2 in the past 2 weeks.

You said you had it at TDC......was it on the right stroke when you checked the rotor? It's a possibility the chain could be off..been there done that heh.cept with my case it would try but it just wouldn't.If you look in my gallery...I've got some pics under Thunder series that are under the hood of my truck...not sureon a 90 but the ECU should be in the same spot.......the pics are on the drivers firewall...the MIDDLE plug is your ECU in the pic.Like I said before.....did you replace the throttle position sensor?that could be your problem as well.
You need to make sure the #1 cyl is on the comp stroke and TDC. Put your thumb over the plug hole as you reach the TDC mark on the crank. It should have pressure against it.

Thanks Al, I had a mechanic at work tell me that today, I felt kinda stupid.
With my timing marks lined up at TDC, my rotor seems to be in between #1 and #3 plug wires. If my timing chain jumped a tooth would I be still able to start it?
