Just picked up a '94 F150 w/ the 300 inline 6. It shifts/drives great, but the engine runs like crap - seems like it's running very rich, and misfiring a lot, particularly in the first third of the gas pedal's travel. If you tip into the throttle lightly, it wants to stall - have to give it a good amount of gas and rev it up before letting the clutch out. It will buck in any gear w/ light throttle application (have to give it more gas), and has a relatively tough time maintaining 70mph when you hit even gradual inclines on the highway (general lack of power).
Also, when you first start the truck, it runs like crap for about 30 seconds before smoothing out a bit, and the idle sounds very high (don't have a tach, so not sure what RPM).
I have changed distributor cap/rotor, and plugs and plug wires (they were all in pretty miserable shape, but the new parts did nothing to change the running condition). Are there any typical problems with these motors? The motor is so simple, I would hope this would be a simple fix.
First, check for any trouble codes and then tell us which, if any, codes show up. Just because the check engine is not on doesn't necessarily mean there are no codes. You can find instructions on how to check for codes on www.fordfuelinjection.com
