I have a 99 Explorr xls 4x4 4.0 liter and the abs light is always on.
Honestly, I tried the search feature first but got an overwhelming number of results.
My abs light came on awhile back and being the brakes seemed to be working fine, I continued to drive it. Now it's time for my safety inspection and I'm sure the light being on will send up red flags.
I have never had to work on the truck at all. I just went out to go some where and the light didn't turn off after start-up. Brake fuild was a little(very little) low, I topped it off and made sure the float was moving freely. Still the light is on. No other lights. No code stored in OBDII.
I searched under the dash for the connector discribed so often to pull the code. Let's see , follow the brake pedal up to the top and there it is ...Not. There is what appears to be the brake light switch and thats it. Nothing under the dash has a black wire with orange trace that I can find.
Where should I be looking for this elusive connector and black/orange wire ?
Some help would be appreciated. I got 3 days to get it inspected.
Try replacing the ABS Sensor on the top of the rear pumpkin.. My 2000 F150 had that same issue.. It appears the sensor in the back will trip the ABS light but give no code.. It's a cheap sensor so your not going to be wasting a lot of money if it doesn't help. I spent 3 months trying to figure it out and someone said replace that sensor, sure enough that was the problem.. I was close to inspection and near the point I was going to just pull the dash and yank the bulb that's lighting up ABS.
I hate to do repairs by shot in the dark method and an't affod to replace even cheap parts that don't need replaceing.But I bit the bullet and got the sensor for the diff and that fixed it.

Well the sensor turned out to be the wrong one. The computer listed the wrong part #. On test driving The brake pedal would pulse as I neared a stop and make a groaning sound similar to when you used to grind gears when learning to drive a manual tranny. The sensor was also .015 smaller in diameter than the original. This caused it to fit very loosely would have proably caused leaks and contamintion of the diff grease. The parts guy matched it up to a Borg Warner part # ABS-288. That's the correct one.
Sorry to be wordy here, but hopeing to have plenty of trigger words for those doing searches on this problem. Just trying to ppay back a little of the help I've gotten here.
