1. Pull the #1 spark plug and have someone hold their finger over the spark plug hole. Turn the crank by hand with a 15/16" socket until they feel pressure building and you see 10* BTDC. This will get you in the ball park for setting the ignition timing.
2. Pop the cap off the distributor and look at where the rotor is pointing. If it is under the #1 spark plug tower then that is fine. If not, adjust the distributor by loosening the hold down and rotate the distributor body until the rotor is under the #1 spark plug tower. Make sure to tighten the hold down again just enough to allow you to rotate it with a little force.
3. Reinstall the #1 spark plug and wire. Put the cap back on the distributor and connect a timing light to the engine. Disconnect the vacuum advance from the distributor and plug the line or connect a vacuum gauge to the line. There should be no vacuum indicated at idle FYI.
4. Make sure the timing light wires are out of the way and start the engine. Check the intial timing and adjust the distributor as needed and tighten it down. Reconnect the vacuum line.
This should give you an idea of what is going on with your engine.
