4.2 upgrade

Hey there,i have a 88 ranger with a 2.9 v6. I was wondering if i could drop in a 4.2 v6 without alot of modifications? Only because with 31" tires and a 3" body lift this truck needs a few more horses. any help??? thanx............Rich

4.2 upgrade

Drop in the 4.0 that is built for the Ranger. It has plenty of power. I'm not sure if the 4.2 would even fit. I'm sure it has differences that may make things difficult.

4.2 upgrade

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Feb-02 AT 12:08 PM (EST)]If a 5.0 will fit, a 4.2 certainly will! And, whether swapping a 3.8, 4.0, 4.2, or 5.0, you're looking at basically the same amount of work (engine plus all the engine wiring and computer.)
BUT if you already have a V6, you won't be REQUIRED to swap trannies. If you have a 4-banger, you're looking at swapping just about everything between the radiator to the driveshaft.

4.2 upgrade

I would check first. The 302 5.0L (closer to a 4.9L, actually!) has a different shaped block, obviously than the 4.2. If I'm not mistaken, the 302 is a shortblack small block V8, where as the set up of the 4.2 is longer but narrower. I could be wrong, but I would definately check it out first.
