Regular vs Super

Has anybody ever had any performance problems running regular octane gas in their 3v 5.4 . Mine had a miss at an idle, and also under a load. 2 dollar bottle of octane boost, and she's purring like a kitten.

I run 87 octane, I don't get any better performane or fuel economy using 89 or 93 octne fuel.

Check your truck for pending codes. You probably have a misfire in one cylinder that smooths out a bit when you use higher octane fuel. You probably have a COP or spark plug going bad.

I use the 87 and have never had an issue. I tow about 3000 lbs and it never skips a beat.

Over the years I've had to progress from 87 to 89 to 93. I ran the better part of a can of seafoam through my tank 4 tanks ago and have been running nothing but 87 ever since. My mileage is still about 13mpg and no miss/knock at idle or under load. Before the seafoam if I didn't run 89 (better yet 93) I'd have miss/knock unless I ran octane boost/fuel system cleaner every other tank. Your miss/knock could be a number of things and most likely what redford said about plug or COP, the bummer about a COP is finding the bad one.

It's a good suggestion to try a can of Seafoam first, it might just be a little crud buildup causing the need for high octane fuel.
