I'm gonna go see a 1986 f150 with a 302 EFI. I like the 80-86 model, and I like EFI, so I'm kind of excited to go see this truck. But I only ever had a 1990 and my Ford Escort that has EFI. Is the 1986 fuel injection anything like the 1990? What are problems to look for?
These trucks are like the girlfriend you marry. While new, there hot and ready to please. 15, 20 years into the relationship, it's tired, don't care about you and can be REEEEL crabby. If it still has a good attatude, get it, if its being a Bitc& right off, look elsewhere!
I've owned 11 Ford trucks, 8 of them between 77 and 86. I've had no more or no fewer problems with the EFI than any of the others. The same basic EFI system was used from 86 to 95, so in general it's pretty reliable. Some guys don't like it because they can't fiddle with it like a carb, and find the electronics daunting, but it's not that complicated. It's just a Ford and has all the Ford quirks....like TFI. The one thing I would look over very well is the engine wiring harness. There's a lot of wire there and it generally doesn't like heat over time.
I like the eec-iv efi. It can be a pain in the ***, but the problems are pretty easy to fix and the computer helps a little in letting you know whats wrong. They do have their quirks though. Mine likes to stall right after you start it some times. It will start right back up and runs fine after that. There are alot of people that have that problem from what I understand.

Yeah, people like me. I have a 1985 F150 with an injected 1990 302, same thing. Stalls after I start it, then runs. It also stalls when I turn into my driveway. I'm thinking it's a combination of low RPM, RPM change, and the load of the PS pump ganging up on me. The one time I've really driven it so far, it did well and gave me roughly 13MPG.
My 86 does that stalling after starting thing also. And after the first start of the day when it comes off high idle, it surges, sometimes to the point of stalling. I have not been able to figure that out for the life of me. I'm not pulling any codes. Any thoughts?
Look at my last posts, I just spent over 20 hours tyring to stop the stall-after start, I pinpoint tested just about every sensor, the EEC, all grounds, Cleaned the TB re-set TPS voltage to spec, new dist body, cap/rotor/wires. new engine ect ect.... Start it up........................Stall! Son of a Bit&h!
Who ever can get this stalling thing can make a fortune!
By the way 2 Ford Dealers can't find it either!

Stalling is also caused by low rpm's. Resetting the idle screw is the solution. Althougn you ARE not supposed to do this, however it can be done. The IAC could also need to be reset by rebooting the computer...read the codes, they do point you in a general direction, but you have to fix each code problem one by one to be able to clear them all... in the order... that you recieved them.
