why does my wireless internet keep going out?

i know that wireless internets can just blank out for different reasons, but i don't understand is this......my wireless goes out at about the same time every day! starting about 10 at night, it goes out, then it is intermittent untill about 2 in the morning and it comes back on again perfectly!

its not the modem, the internet still works just fine, it works to the wireless unit where i have the ether cable plugged into it for when the wireless.

the signal strength is fine, but just no internet signal on it.

this has been going on for a long time.

i have thought about everything, microwave, neighbors, this and that and nothing comes to mind.

it happens almost every night between those times i gave, yet before and after the wireless works perfectly.

anyone know whats up?

no, its not comcast.

i was thinking of maybe they mess with the signal between 10pm and 2 am, its not enough for my comp to notice but enough for the wireless unit to notice.

plugged in to the wireless, the internet is fine, the problme is just when using the wireless and only between 10pm and 2am.

this has been going on since april at least.

Do you have your computer doing any scheduled tasks during that time frame?

Do you have wireless security setup??

Maybe a neighbor is coming home from work at those times and piggy backing off your internet and that is bogging things down..

You should change the router password and setup WEP security at a minimum.

Is this a Verizon wireless modem?

If it is then you may need to contact them for help setting up the router.

I don't recall the proper frequency, but, certain types of cordless phones are on the same freq. as wireless routers. (I think it' the 2.4 ghz phones. ???)

My wireless stuff (Linksys) used to go 'haywire' when my youngest daughter got on the phone.

I changed out the phones and the problem went away.

Just a thought. . . .

That's what I'm thinking, some kind of interference going on at those times.

I vote your Neighbor stealing your bandwidth. Set up a secure connection by logging into your wireless router at http://192.168.0.1

and yes this is pretty much a big problem in apartment type homes. And no, it is not microwave or any other device...if you can connect to internet by directly using a Ethernet cable and "no show" on Wireless, that it is pretty much your neighbor/your other computers...

If you don't have any security set up on your wirless router you need to ASAP. There are some routers that have access scheduling in the security menus. It might be possible that the router is setup to deny service at those times.

For anyone using wireless routers I suggest (I'm not a pro but I've been around the block a few times);

1. DO NOT broadcast your SSID.

2. Use encription of some kind whether WEP or WPA, the important thing is to use one of them, your level of personal paranoia should dictate which one.

3. Use the MAC address filter on your router to allow only those computers you choose to access the network.

4. Enable the hardware firewall solution built in th=o your router.

5. Always use a software firewall solution as well (WinXP firewall is near useless, I've dissabled that and use an older version of Sygate Personal Firewall 5.6, it's free and I've had no known problems).

Hope this helps you.

On top of what everyone else already said, you can usually change the channel the router is using.

Just like the older cordless phones (before channel hunting) where you could change the channel by pushing a button on the handset, the wireless router allows you to set what channel it's using.

Change it, and see if it helps. If it doesn't, keep trying different channels.

Other radio stuff interferes... Neighbor's cordless phones, CB radios, HAM radios (anyone a HAM around the neighborhood?) especially with a linear (ditto for CB'ers), all sorts of things.

Does it just go OUT at 10PM and come back at 2AM? Or does it get intermittent during that period? Either someone is using your bandwidth, or someone's doing something between 10PM and 2AM - again, a HAM operator or a CB'er with a linear...

Or, just someone on one of those spread-spectrum 2.4Ghz cordless phones - some of them pack a whallop and can easily broadcast on multiple channels (the definition of spread-spectrum).

You have gotten some advice about interference & wireless security. I would log onto my router & see what computers are connected when everything is working good & then again it is slow 10PM - 2AM. You might have company on there that you don't want. If you do implement the suggested wireless security. Let us know what you find. Next step for me would be interference.

A neighbor using a BitTorrent download/upload really takes your bandwidth.

okay, bear with me....i looked and i guess it is broadcasting my ssid, how do i have it not braodcast it? i am using a linksys.

i thought i had already made it a secure network, yes/no? under network properties it says.......security type-no authenication (open); encryption type-WEP; network security key (some black dots)

when i got my new computer, i had to type in a bunch of numbers for the computer to log onto the wireless network.

"I vote your Neighbor stealing your bandwidth. Set up a secure connection by logging into your wireless router at http://192.168.0.1" dang, i got totally fubared on that one, i do not understand!

between 10pm and 2am it is intermit, it goes off and on, plus when it is online, it lots of times is real real slow, i plug into the router and it works, plus if i turn the router off then back on it sometimes works, but only for a little bit then either gets very slow or does not work at all, but it still shows strong signal strength.

thanks for the responses, i still am confused on the log onto the router thing and i don't know how to make sure my wireless is secure, but i am sure i made it a secure network.

i am going to read back through the responses more in detail to see what comes up.

sign into your router using the web browser and the network address you assigned it to have.
Under Wireless>basic wireless setup, there is a function to disable ssid broadcast.

Then, Change your router's ip address to something like 192.168.5.1 255.255.255.0
This will ensure you are not infringing on the ISP's dhcp address they're giving out.

cool?
