I was talking with my friend who has an early 04 f-350 with one of the early problematic 6.0's and he was saying that one of the changes they made was to the intercooler pipe. He said that they changed it from the plastic one to an aluminum one and he showed me what he was talking about and it looks different than the one I have. His blew off at 1400 miles while he was towing his camper and dented his hood.
So, I've got the same black plastic intercooler pipe that he's talking about. Mine is an early 2005 production so I'm wondering if there was a recall for this or not. I'm a little concerned because I'll be towing my camper this weekend and the last thing I want to do is blow this pipe off. Does anyone know if they changed the design maybe for 2005?
I've been looking at the trucks for sale on e-bay with pics of the engine bays and you can see the difference. More than 1/2 of the 04's seem to have the aluminum pipe, then only 2 or 3 of the 2005's had the aluminum pipe, and all of the 2006 have the plastic pipe. He had said the dealer changed the pipe from plastic to aluminum and they used a different clamp that had staples in the rubber connecter that would dig into the aluminum as you clamped it down and apparently that helped to stop the pipe from blowing off.

i'm confused... so they switched from aluminum to plastic , or they switched from plastic to aluminum ?
you say the 06's were all plastic, but that they switched from plastic to aluminum... i would rather have the plastic, so if you wanna trade let me know.
i believe the aluminum pipes transfer too much engine compartment heat into the intake air...
Well the short answer is both I from the info I have. It sounds like they started with plastic in late 03/early 04 and they had a problem with them blowing off. The fix was to replace it with the aluminum piece. My ASSUMPTION here is that they redesigned the pipe sometime in 05/06 to fix the blow off problem and went back to using the plastic pipe? That's what I'm trying to clarify. I plan to call the dealer tomorrow to find out what the deal is. I was hoping someone here had some experience with it or maybe more detail.
I spoke to the dealer today and the service guy said that the use of the aluminum pipe was for a specific recall that applied to late 03/early 04 6.0's. Outside of that window, it should be a plastic pipe.
where can i get the plastic pipes and how much would it cost me ? anyone wanna trade for my aluminum ones ?
Maybe the new pipes are much better designed than the old plastic pipes but I had the first generation plastic pipes. Let me assure you that you DON'T want any of those, I got so good at replacing them I could do it half asleep in the dark in -35* temps.... I actually carried tools to do it in the center console because I had to do it so often. I've never had to do it since they were replaced with the aluminum ones (even if the heat up the charge air a little). Although I played around with the LiveLink S/W on my SCT and IATs are usually pretty close to ambient most of the time, so the effect isn't that great.
i grabbed one of c/a pipes the other day and burned the hell out of my hand, it was the hot side mind you, so that i/c must really make a helluva difference
The intercooler makes a huge difference, that why it's there
When you rolling down the road and pushing air through it it does an amazing job of getting that air cooled off; sitting still, not so much
If you've got a laptop, set up the live link s/w sometime and take your truck for a spin and watch the IATs, you'll see how good the stock intercooler is.
Not Livewire.... LiveLink.... It came on the CD for your SCT, it lets you plug your SCT into the truck and you laptop into the SCT to monitor data/do data capture as you're driving. You just pick the parameters you want from a list, say start data capture and go for a drive.... It's not that easy to watch when you're driving but if you're a data geek (I know I am) it lets you see a lot of things going on with the truck.
