I have a 98 4.2 F-150 with 4x4, and a 5 speed. I drive very hard. I do a lot of off roading, mudding, and heavy hauling, and I have never had a problem. I have 88k on mine and no problems. What is the deal. I can't belive that I'm just that lucky.:-X23
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-May-02 AT 01:52 PM (EST)]This subject has come up before and I ask myself the same question you did. Am I THAT lucky?? At 60,500 miles, I have had 'nary a hiccup. No engine problem at all. The Mazda 5-speed is a little clunky (no speed shifting) but, I have been completely happy with my truck. I do NOT expect a 4.2 v6 to pull like a 5.4 v8. To date, my truck has served me well and I expect it will continue to.
OBTY, gas mileage has remained very consistent since I drove the truck off the dealer's lot. 16-17 around town. 18-20 on Interstate.
I have gotten right at 21 mpg once, but I was driving about 65-70 mph.
On rare occasions, with all city driving and running pretty heavy footed, I'll get 15mpg. But I have never gotten worse than that.

I don't expect v-8 performance out of a v-6 either, I pulled a 7000lb. trailer over 1600 miles and yeah, it wasn't a hod rodder, but it pulled it great, and I still got about 14-15 mpg. Thats good for the load. Those are good engines.
