Hey all,
I have an apparent short or ground problem in my 92. I recently replaced the alternator and both batteries after having them tested at the auto parts store. When I started the truck, all seemed well but then the volt gauge went down, the charge light came on and the voltage regulator was pistol hot. I disconnected the negative cables from the batteries, and put a test light between the negative post and the cables and the test light lit up. I think this means that I have something bleeding to ground. Do you have any suggestions of where to look first as it will take HOURS to search the entire wiring harness?
Assuming it didn't do it before then it's got to be related to the work you did. Check the battery cables, make sure the insulation hasn't rubbed through on the frame or engine component. Check that noting is touching any of the terminals, at the battery, solenoid, starter, alternator, etc. Disconnect your alternator and test if you have hot at the ground again, could be the alternator's a bad one and shorting out inside.
