auto tranny life

i fear my stock tranny is on its last leg... recently ive noticed a lot of delay between shifts when i really get on it. when pulling it seems the rpms stay at about 2400 until about 60 mph when the t/q locks up. it does the same when not pulling, but not as bad. tranny temps stay around the 120* area when empty and 150-170 pulling. i dont have an aftermarket valve body or shift kit. would a bts vb help or is my tranny shot? thanks

It might just be the stock torque converter - tough to tell. It's the weak link in the chain. But you should drop the tranny pan as soon as you can and take a look and see what kind of debris or gunk you see. Do you have an in line tranny filter? They are a good thing to have - if the TC decides to puke the in line filter will save the tranny.

My wife went to school in Brookings for a couple of years, small world.... We just went camping at Whitlock and Yankton.

i dont have an inline filter. im on a poor mans budget so i cant afford a built tranny like a bts and such. so what can i do to prolong the life of the stock tranny until i can find funds for a bts?

I would go to Napa or a Auto parts place(Ford carries them also) and get an in line tranny filter to stick in the return line. Cost about $25. It's an in line filter that you place in the return line after the tranny cooler. Just cut the flexible hose in the return line between the tranny cooler & the metal tubing return line that runs to the rear of the tranny and place the filter there.

That way if your TC pukes you will help stop the debris from heading back into the tranny. Before anything you should pick up some fluid & drop the pan and see if there is any gunk or metal shavings in the pan. That will give you a better idea of what is going on inside.

I think my tranny is also going. I dont haul much, but I do drop the pedel from time to time to smoke a few retard drivers. when I drop the peddle it kicks in then hesitates before locking up again. which worries me. but also could be my turbo boots cause I just looked at them and they have lots of oil on them. but it still does it after I clean them.

Year? Model? it could be XLE progarmming if its a 99-00. as far as the boots you do tighten them after you clean them don't you? If you clean them and the oily stuff comes back then there is a leak. Also do a CCV mod to help alleviate this problem.

Didn't we just have some posts about adding the external transmission filter and temperatures climbing 20 degrees? I was about to add the external filter and that post now has me rethinking the plan. I'd hate to add a protection filter to only shorten the transmission life with higher temps. I believe the post said something about BTS not recommending an external transmission filter for this reason. I can't find that post right now. Just a thought. Mark

BD,
yes I tighten them after I clean them. you say leak? from where besides the CCV. ot is that the only culprit? those are on the things to do ,but havn't got to them yet. busy summer fun/work

it is a 2000, never heard of that XLE programing before. and all I have is a diablo programer set in 60 most of the time, but in 80 for a road trip I am taking this weekend.

Mark - Is the temp rise be due to a lower flow rate because of the external filter? I was thinking about adding the external filter also. But think I'll wait until I hear more comments on it now.

CCV should not be leaking, CCV mod is more to remove the oily residue from your intake, and IC. you also have two boots from the spyder to the intake plenums (orange or red)check those clamps. check up pipes for leaks(behind turbo) check also EBP tube for cracks, holes etc. Also clean EBP tube and sensor.

XLE programming is the stock programming that your PCM came with from the factory. XLE does not let the TC lock up during 3rd gear, unless certain conditions are present, sometimes this is a problem sometimes it is not. The way to tell is to take a small mirror and look at the sticker on top of your PCM (behind E-Brake). Your Diablo does not replace the original programing in your PCM it just adjusts variables.
The best towing PCM program is PMT-1 it came in the 01's -03's,

I understand Brian's reasoning against it but I have had no temperature increase. I've had the filter on there since January 07 and I towed our 5th wheel all summer long with it on. Tranny runs about 65 degree above OAT not towing, and 80-90 degrees above OAT when towing. I will change it out next oil change & open it up to see how the filter looks.

The thinking is restrictive flow through a filter reduces volume through the cooler. I guess it all depends on the type of filter. I'm sure a test could be conducted. Disconnect before the filter and start the truck and measure 5 seconds of flow, then disconnect after the filter and measure 5 seconds of flow. If your temps didn't go up, I wouldn't worry. Mark
