need some help

Exclamation need some help

My brother has a 95 ranger and the fuel gauge doesnt work. he has been using the odometer to measure how much gas he has and that went out. i chech the tranny and there is no speedo cable. is it all electric. how can you fix the prob. he has a v4 and manual trans. thanks

The fuel gauge is probably because of a bad fuel level sender. If memory serves is is mounted right with the fuel pump... in the gas tank.

yeah i think that is right however what about the trip counter or odometer

The speed-o is electrically driven. It uses the output from the rear ABS speed sensor, located in the top front of the rear differential.

Other systems like the ABS, auto tranny, cruise control, also use the speed sensors output, so if it's corrupt, he may be getting hints form those systems too.

Edit: You can check the fuel gauge by grounding it's lead & see if it moves to full scale.
If you come to think the fuel pump mounted sending unit, or float is bad, some say it's easier to pull the bed back, to access the pump, rather than dropping the fuel tank to replace the pump, or float.
