ok heres the deal .... I have an 86 f150 4x4, with a 4 speed? standard tranny going to the transfer case, what would I have to do to change it to automatic??the cab is off the truck so it should be easy to swap things around
What engine and transfer case do you have? You would need a tranny that mates to the engine and the trans will need a tail shaft that would connect to your transfer. It might be easiest to get a tranny and transfer that will bolt up to your engine. You will also have to probably change your driveshaft lengths.

I have a 302 efi, w/ manual transfer case, sombody stole my rear drive shaft while it was parked in a compound in the north end so I need a new one anyways
Joe, you might post this on the forum that includes your year of truck. The folks there probably would be able to give you more specific information on what tran/transfer combos would be an easy fit. I don't know if the 86's used a 302/351w bolt pattern C6 or a C4 or some form of the AOD that year. Any of those should work as far as bolting up to your engine, but I don't know about other problems you might run into.
to change to an auto wont be a hassle at all. You just need a small block bellhousing auto. C6 is the strongest option, and by far the easiest to rebuild/build. the c6 is ony a 3 speed without overdrive. Your other option is an aod, which is still a strong tranny, but is a 4 speed with overdrive. You will have to do somthing about a shifter. Either you can get a new column and related linkages, or personaly how I would do it is purchase a hurst or likewise ratchet shifter for it. That way its just cables. You'll also have to set up the kick down system, but that is just a cable that attatches to the throttle body.
