Overheating '97 2.3L

This is driving me nuts! The temperature will slowly climb to the red line after driving for ten to fifteen minutes. The only way to stop it from boiling over is to drive with the heater on. Even then it stays about 3/4 of the way up. I've checked the hoses, they're fine. Changed the thermostat and flushed the sytem. Removed the radiator and cleaned it and the condenser. Installed new fan clutch. The best I can tell the water pump is good. All this and no change. Since I've been lucky enough not to allow it to actually boil over(heater on high) it doesn't seem to loose any water. There is also no indication of a head or head gasket problem. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

sounds like you have air in the system. How are you determining that the water pump is working?

You need to replace your radiator. You are getting flow, as the flow through the heater core is able to make a difference, so the pump must be working. The tubes are plugged, at least enough of them to cause rising temperature.
If you have a "point type" (non-contact) thermometer, I bet you find a bunch of cool sites on the radiator fins. You can also use the 'mk-1 mod-0 hand' test to gingerly check the temp across the face of the radiator. Betchu find warm and HOT spots.
Rule of my thumb: if it overheats on the road it is most likely the radiator, at idle, the pump.

It appears that air is trapped in the system and therefore no fluid is moving on a consistant basis to cool the engine evenly.

Sorry it took me so long to get back, been busy! A few other people I've talked to said to replace the radiator also. One person said the vains in the water pump could be corroded and not moving enough coolant. Anyway thanks a million for the info!
