okay got a big problem with a 1986 ford f 250 with a 460 ci engine the problem is i can not keep fuel in the fuel filter it runs out and i have 2 tanks and it does the same on either one of the tanks it dont matter which tank you are running on. it will idle till it runs out. the parts store said it has either electric or a manual pump. i can not find the manual pump so i asume it is eletric but i dont hear a pump and i dont see how both pumps stopped at the same time, truck was running when i parked it and had to replace the heads both where cracked, so has any one here knows what the problem is??
oh and what will cause the gas not to be poured in the tank?? i tryed to pour gas in the darn thing and it fills the neck but want go in the tank??
Your truck has electric pumps. They are powered by a fuel pump relay. The relay is trigged to come on during starting by a circuit over at the starter solenoid. But after it gets going, the relay is powered by a circuit that goes through a oil pressure switch. I bet you have some wires that are not hooked up, or are in the wrong place. Also during engine work or a engine swap, most people forget to hook up the little ground wire going from the firewall to the engine block.
dave where are the relays located at on the truck, i seen a bunch of wires coming from the oil pressure switch, and in the a wiring harness that goes to a thing on the passenger side valve cover with some red wires and plugs on them, and i have not found the one for the starter silanoid
The oil pressure cutoff switch is the most likely problem: (1) oil pressure below about 4 1/2 psi. (2) connector not plugged in to the switch properly. (3) bad switch.
