CPS Question

My Dad's 1998 F-250 diesel is displaying classic bad CPS symptoms. It dies while driving and belches a black cloud of smoke, but if you push in the clutch, shut off the key and then re-start it while rolling, the truck cranks right back up.

I have a couple of used CPSs that I bought off of a guy to have as spares. I have a 1999 F-350 7.3. I am wondering if this will work for his truck?

My dad is not even sure what engine his truck has, he only knows it's a diesel and a 1998. I haven't been to his house to even pop the hood and look yet.

I tried to look on line for part numbers and got nowhere. Does anyone have a good site I can bookmark for when I need part numbers?

To add to my confusion, the site I was at listed a Camshaft Position Sensor ($100) and a Crankshaft Position Sensor ($40) What is this latter part and why is the Camshaft Position Sensor so much $$$? I thought they were about $25 now.

I think I paid around $80 bucks at NAPA the last CPS (cam position sensor) I replaced. The one before that was done at the dealership for $145 ouch!

I bought 2 of the gray cps at the dealer this week, 27.00 each. Your dad must have a 99' psd, don't think they had a 98' psd. Would be a cheap fix if it is the cps. So try it, if it is not that then you have a spare. Good luck

Your dad's truck is probably considered an early 7.3. Look on the door sticker for a build date. I think anything built between 2/98 and 2/28/99 is considered an early 7.3 and after 3/1/99 is a late 7.3. I believe they use the same CPS. Don't know what a crankshaft sensor is but it does sound like your problem is a Camshaft Position Sensor(CPS). You should be able to get one a you local ford dealer for less than $30.00. Be sure and get the gray colored on with part number F7TZ-12K073-B. I wouldn't waste my time trying a used CPS. Spend the 25-30 dollars and eliminate that problem.

The 98 uses the same cps as your truck (99).
