runemaster,

If you go to your local library or police station and ask to look at your states' law on automobile light colors.

Most states have a law stating what color lights MUST be and where they could be mounted.

For example New Jersey states headlights must be white (the new bluish gas lights DID come under some scruitiny here), front/side markers can be either white or amber. Rear lights/side markers can be amber or red. License plates must be illuminated at night by a white light.

ANY other color is illegal and any extra light placement must be approved by the Department of Transportation...and they will NOT approve any extra light placement.

Hope this helps a little.

You can also search the internet. Most states have their statutes listed online.

Findlaw.com is a good starting point, they have laws listed for the 50 states, by topic.

As long as your "off-Road", meaning out of view of the road mostly, you can get away with most things. Private Property and Motor Vehicle laws don't play well together in most states, so when your on private property anything lighting related should be acceptable (Unless your impersonating a LEO.)
