Headers (again)

IMMMMM back. did a quite a bit of research over the last coupla weeks and have a question for he guru's. first i have a friend that is a mechanic and when i talked with him about the header thing he did say that they would help BUT he said that when he was in college he did his thesis on engines, cold weather, and headers (among other things) he did not recomend putting headers on any engine in Montana or any of the nothern states as they cool off to fast in very cold weather and warp the heads and/ or crack the valves within two years. he said they monitored 10 vehickles over a 4 year period and 95 percent of the ones with headers died of warped heads or cracked valves. any thoughts on this. also i have since changed to up grading to electronic dist. and componants.and an RV cam. Mallory, MSD< and duraspark are almost in the range of to expensive. what would be wrong with putting an upgrade from a 74, up. 300 6 cyl. dist. with better plugs like the platinum + 4's and a hotter coil. cost is aabout half of the newer dist. Maybe Number Dummy can tell me if the 74's and up will drop into my 66. Dutch

Well Dutch, I can tell you about the headers in my truck, I live in Oregon on the high plains desert. I put the headers on the truck in 1980, I used a set of Cyclones. They are on my 66 F100 4x4 with a 390 hi pro engine. I have never replaced the gaskets at the heads, and the colector gaskets have been changed once, after the truck was hit in the side where the exhaust comes out and broke the mounting off. I would not say that all headers work as well as these have, but they have worked very well on this truck.

Are you running a 300 I-6? You can buy a "new/used" distributor from the classifieds if you keep your eyes open. You can also upgrade the internals of you current dist with a pertronics or crane kit. The Durasparks are good for stock . I found a new Duraspark on ebay for $99 plus shipping. It doesn't come with the brain box though. I have made my own harness for them before and it isn't hard as long as you use weather tight connectors. Buy a new brain from the local auto sote and your in buisness. The +4 plugs are ok but they wont give you that much of an increase in power. Increasing the coil power will help with burning all the fuel though.

Sorry guys, another brain fart, old timers disease. i'm running a 300, 6 cyl. from a 66 van econoline and is now in a 1964, 4X4 1/2 ton. i pulled my camper around all summer long with it and it did OK but would like to get a little more ooomph, out of it without losing the gas milage. thus the headers and the upgrade in electronics. dutch
