Hi guys;
I would like to stroke a 427 with a 4.25 stroke crank, Question for today is to go to the 427 bore (4.25) would it be better to use an FT block, I have heard they are a little thicker in the walls, any comments? anyone have an old dump truck or school buss? Thanks.
You need a block that has been cast with 427 cyl wall cores. So the FT blocks are out. Other than an actual 427 block some 406 blocks, and one paticular 428 block were cast with 427 wall cores and crossbolt bosses. Best you'll do with a FT block is a 4.13+ 428 bore IF it has 428 wall cores inside. There is a simple field test called the drill bit test. You simply gauge the wall cores with drill bit shanks to see what they were cast with. Dave Shoe a member on the net54 forum came up with this little diddy. I've also heard about.. and used allen wrenches the same way. But the drill bits are far more accurate. 427 wall cores will snugly fit a 8/64" drill bit shank. 428 cores a 13/64" bit and 360,390 a 17/64" bit. To access the cyl wall core area you need to remove the blocks 6 freeze plugs. You'll see the cyl gap inside.
Hi i found a 330ft ( C6ME-A) block 406 -428 ( 13/64 ) drill bit wall core,s i guess i was lucky i only bore it out to a 365 ,( i save sum for my old age ) i would never sell my 361 , hi ffr428 the motor you guy,s help me build it going so good i thank you heaps it got lots of torque just what i wanted , only trouble i had was i had to shim the rocker post up a little , i use fe heads (C8AE-H ) all truck bottom end , the valve,s were riding a little but it sweet now purring like a big ford just wish i new what it is in hp /ft , i guessing but i think its around 250hp , 350ft, im still running her in cant what till is run in a little more before i feel it run free ,ill oil/filter/tune her up around 500miles it still has a oil bath air clener on her it looks great
if you gots lots of money you can buy a genesis block that has the 427 bore!
good luck man, I hope you find one, but you should be able to find an ft block that has thick enough cores for the 4.13 bore. the only difference with the ft is the distributor support in the block is different so a little machine work there but no biggy. there is a place here about 250 miles from here that has so many of those ft blocks that they have them stacked up on shelves in a shed and have a heaping pile outside because the huge shed is FULL. its a auto wrecking yard that deals with big rigs too. perhaps something like that is in your area too.
