DIY DVD question

I want to mount a DVD/laptop support bracket thru the rear environmental control panel - supported from above. I had expected to find a roof support or other sturdy surface up there but instead I found a plastic housing.

Any thoughts on how to do this? I know you can by aftermarket DVD systems but I'm trying this on a very low budget.

My intent was to carve a hole in the enviro. control housing (on the foreward side where no controls are mounted) to allow a "pipe" to pass thru. I had hoped to mount a threaded flange to the interiour of the roof or support member and then simply thread in a pipe. The other end would support a small shelf for a DVD player or laptop.

When I saw the plastic housing above the ceiling liner I got dubious about its ability to support much weight at all, let alone safely.

Anyone else do this on the cheap?

I have the factory rear DVD system in my truck but recently it has been out for service 2 times. It seems that it wants to break just before we take a long road trip, it really makes the kids happy.

What I did as a temp fix was to get a piece of plywood cut to size so that it rests on the rear of each frt arm rest. I then took some of that no slip liner stuff and covered the wood with it. After that I put the portable DVD player on top and kids in both rows had a clear view of it. Mom could change movies for them easily enough and they were quiet for the 3 hour trip.

I have also seen people use the pet barriers that you buy to seperate animals from the cab. They mount the barrier across the rear of the fron seats and attach dual screen dvd players to the barrier. I seen a few nice looking installs that way but cant find the links now, I think it was on a Suburban forum that I use to frequent before I got the X.

i installed 2 7" in the headrest..and i put the unit under the front passenger seat. its amazing how much wiring there is..its not a pro job..but i saved alot of money by doing it myself. im going to put a monitor in the passenger visor...but i want a small screen..maybe 4 inches or smaller. i dont think the huge...like 10" monitors are a good idea....do you watch tv 2 ft from your big screen in your house?

I appreciate all of the comments, but I'd still like to find out if anyone knows what is behind the black housing that is above the rear climate controls pannel - anything that could take the weight of a dvd player? Any wires? I may have to take a dremel to it and I'd like to not cut any wires by mistake.
