I watched (and helped some) while mine was replaced at a Ford dealer. Hardest part is getting the drivers side fender liner out of the way. Then use a 10 mm (I think) socket on a long extension to unbolt the IDM from the back side of the fender well. I think the guy lowered the IDM before unplugging the cable, and then reverse the order to install the new one.
If you have an early 99, make sure the UVC connector isn't your real problem, which it was for me, and now I've got a spare IDM to show for it.
