[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Apr-02 AT 04:14 PM (EST)]Last January, I ordered my 2002 F250 with the V10/6sp. and 4.30LS (it was finally delivered this week, see my gallery). When I ordered the truck, the 3.73LS was not available with this combination. Since I don't do a lot of heavy towing (just pull a 19' boat), I got the 4.30's with the view that I could put on 33" tires or a small lift and 35" tires which would effectively reduce my gearing to "about" the 3.73 level and I would still get the limited slip. I can live with the slightly lower towing capacity in exchange for that setup. And if I don't do the lift/tires, the lower gearing will just help with the performance loss we experience up here at 7400' in the mountains. If you ever are going to consider a lift and/or larger tires, its a no-brainer. The 4.30's just give you more options, IMHO.
I have a question; my 98 E-350 V-10 on the door tag says "34" for the rear axle ratio. But I can't find ANYWHERE that will give me that info. I believe it says "LS" also. Any help ?
Rumor has it that Ford will be offering a 5-speed auto next year. Any ideas on how this will change the debate on the 3.73 vs. 4.30? Will this new 5 speed have a lower range and top out with the same OD ratio as the 4 speed or will it have a higher OD ratio? In other words, will you be able to get the 4.10 rear end and get similar non-towing highway MPG as the current 4-speed and a 3.73 rear end? Or am I just thinking too much?
