I'm just about ready for gauges. I'm planning on using the DieselManor ISSPRO 3 gauge set on the Apillar. I have a couple questions
1) What are the advantages/disadvantages or other considerations of the drill and clamp vs. the drill and tap installation methods other that the clamp being more simple.
2) What are the advantages/disadvantages or other considerations of preturbo vs. post turbo monitoring?
3) Also, I've heard of monitoring the tranny fluid at the output pipe instead of the pan. Any opinions on this?
I opted for pre-turbo and tapped type. That was the hardest part of the instal for me but it stil wasn't that bad, mostly because my father did that part. I like the fact that I have the tapped type now that it is done. My experience with it being difficult is rare compared to others that have chimmed in. The clamp in type has the potential to loosen over time whereas my type won't.
As far as the pre- vs. post turbo, I like the idea of knowing what the temp is as close to the combustion source as possible, but it is all relative IMHO. Others like post turbo readings. The location for tapping was also easy to get the probe drilled for pre-turbo.
I agree with what was just posted - plus as mentioned in another thread - pre turbo gives you a VERY accurate number of what's really going on - true EGT's .. post turbo can be affected by a number of variables. The clamped on method can come loose and still is not quite as accurate as the thermocouple sender sitting right in the path of the exhaust gasses. It's REALLY not that hard - it just takes patience. You can do the drill/tap in about 10 minutes.
The trans temp is actually monitored just above the pan - there's a plug you remove and the sender goes in there.
I saw in the installation instructions that you could do either a T-fitting into the MAP line or drill and TAP the Turbo. What is the advantage of the drill and Tap over the T fitting
