I just purchased a new timing gear set. They say to put the timing mark on the cam sproket pointing down at 6:00, however the Ford manual says to put the Cam sproket Pin pointing down at 6:00. Which is correct.
the manufacturer intended for you to line up the timing marks on your sprockets. they have done the math and set it accordingly. I suspect its easier to install this way. the cam sprocket pin ended up at 12:00 position on my set for straight up timing, no advance or retard. but that was how the timing set manufacturer set it. I noticed the difference myself, as the set I pulled off was the original ford set.

Pin on top, dots lined up nose to nose on the crank/cam gears. How was the stocker setup ? and keep in mind that the old one could have been 180º off from where you think it was, beeing at the exhaust TDC
Thank you for your information. The actual Ford Manual (i.e. 66 Ford Truck) shows a picture of the gears with the pin in the 6:00 position as the correct timing. The instructions from the new timing set are the ones that show the pin at 12:00 and the dot at 6:00. I understand what it does, but I am not understanding why the difference. Thanks anyway.
All its doing is putting the cam 180deg off. The cam makes 1 rev for ever 4 the crank makes (aka 4 stroke). So with the cam 180 off can make your distributer 180 off. I recommend rotating the crack to TDC look at cam markings. Then look at the distributer, it will be pointing to #1 or 180 deg off. Continue rotating the crank till all the marks align up. Then remove the old timing gear set and install the new one. This way your distributer will be in time with the cam.
Either method will work, but you may have to move your distributer to correct for the cam timing.
well, install it the way the manufacturer says to and turn the crank one revolution and cam will turn a half revolution, I bet then the factory settings are lined up. I cannot answer you why the difference though. I am curious too.

idiot on photo day ?? Bottom liner the dots equal go... set the dizzy to#1 when you feel comp on the spark hole for that cyl @ tdc. Your good...
Thank you for all of the info., Yes, it can be installed either way, just rotate the crank and everything is fine. I called Comp. and they said the dots are just easer to line up, that's it.
Anyone know if these piston number (C1AE-6110) are from a 390??
