Hey guys, I need some help. I have a 1991 Taurus that needs a tranmission. I know it's an AXOD, but what I don't know is whether or not it's an AXOD-E or just a plain AXOD.
I changed a tranny for a guy in a 91 Taurus earlier this summer. I had some issues finding the right one. It must have been an AXOD-E, as the first junkyard unit he brought me used a TV cable, and the car had electrical connectors only. The second one he brought me had the right connector on the side but the one on the top was shaped different with a different number of pins. It took quite awhile to find one with the right top connector as it seems like this particular version was only used for a year, maybe two.
When my dad looked around the local yards told him that it was a 1991 only tranmission, that's the reason we decided to rebuild over replace. I did some google searching about it and found out that 1991 was the FIRST year for the AXOD-E, and that it's got some bugs. I'm hoping the transgo no yoyo shift kit will help improve longevitiy. The car has 99k miles (that's right 99k not 199k) on it and you can still see yourself in the paint.
Update 12-19-07:
Trans rebuilt and failed after 1000 miles due to the transgo shift kit... "Plug the fluid holes in the input shaft, and cut notches in the end of it! This will improve oiling 10 times!" Yeah right, it starved the gear set and drum assembly of fluid and it burnt up. Bright side is I can get a used trans for $125.
