building a 460
A few good things to to learn from...
1. Talk with the shop you want to do the work. Most of the time they will explain what things you can do at home or advise you what you shouldn't even try. Sometimes you can even figure out if they should even be allowed to touch a set of calipers to measure your parts. If you're not sure yourself post what they recommend here and someone will be able to advise you.
2. Quality machine work AFTER you blue print the block and heads with some help from some of the publications available at most book stores or online. Look at the reincarnation website for more info. Seems that I see a few that don't listen to this and port their heads after the new seats are cut and end up nicking them.
3. 4 bolt main caps are not a requirement. However I do recommend main studs for a little extra insurance.
4. Balance the rotating assembly as much as the shop is willing too. This will allow the engine to rev faster and survive multiple high RPM pulls with which you're intending to do.
There are more but this is all the time I have at the moment. I am sure there will be more that others will post.
depending on how much you do to port these heads and upgrade them, with proper parts selection, your combo can make anywhere from 400hp with mild porting up to 550 or more hp with major porting and head work.
the factory heads are capable of up to 600hp in ported and modified form, but probably are not capable of supporting more than 450hp in stock or mild cleanup condition. just way to restricitve exhaust ports.
to do it properly, get the heads ported, larger valves installed (at least 2.19" intakes) flowed and then take the flow numbers to the cam supplier to get a cam suited to your needs and head potential. no sense in sticking a big cam in an engine that can't support it.
check out reincarnation-automotive.com. he can get max flow out of the stock big block heads and has a section on how to properly port your heads (cost $25 registration fee, but well worth it (not to view the site but to get the porting info)).
