Brakes/Calipers

Well it seems I have alot of questions lately lol.

I am wanting to replace the pads and calipers on my 66 F-100 but not sure what to look for as far as year/make/model to get the right parts.

From what I have read the 66 didn't come with front disk brakes but mine has them and none of the auto parts stores show that option for this truck so what would I need to search to get the right brake parts as far as pads and calipers?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike Some folk try to make this more complicated than is necessary. I have read all of the posts concerning the different methods of brake upgrade and come back to my method every time. I will only recommend buying your donor truck and swapping out the parts. When I need any part for my 66 below the chassis I know to ask for 76 F150 parts, because I bought a 76 donor and swapped the pars.

It is very likely that the parts for your twin I-beam truck will be 73-79 parts, but no one here can tell for sure.

There are a lot of people that swap the drum's for the disc setup. If you ask for parts for a 70 something F-100 you should be able to get the right ones. Checkout some of the online autopart vendors for the same part #'s between years. If you have the parts out you can take them in with you to physically match them.

Disk was offered on 70+. I think they use the same pads up to 76. Pull one out a take it with you. My 68 has 72 power disk brakes.

oh ok, so should the rotors from a 70's F-100/F-150 work on mine then?

I have no problem removing them and taking them up to the autoparts store just want to make sure what I am looking for.

Thanks guys,
Mike

First use of disc brakes on an 2WD F100 = 1973 / 4WD = 1976

Discs were optional on 1968/72 F250 2WD's and F350's.

Standard equipment on 1973 and later 2WD F250's and F350's / 1976 F250 4X4's and 1979 F350 4X4's.

Mind if I jump in here with a question of my own? I hauled my son down to the local Carquest to look for some parts for my '62 F-250 that we are going to work on as a father/son project. Fist thing we noticed was how expensive the wheel cylinders are for the front drums. My first thought was to upgrade to the '64+ style which are much netter and cheaper. We discussed what it would take to upgrade and the young but fairly confident sounding counter guy recommended that I get the whole front spindle assembly from a disc brake equipped later model F-250 and the would bolt right up. Then of course upgrade the MC. But it seems like I looked at this avenue before and it didn't seem that simple.
Thanks for any help,
Rich

Go back and smack the counter guy.

The later I beam discs will not bolt to a straight axle, no matter how big a hammer you use. To upgrade to discs you need to use an aftermarket provided brake kit. No kits are offered in eight lug F250 pattern, only the five lug F100 pattern.

Do you have the single push type wheel cyl?

Yeah! You are right. I just looked at a 74 with discs and could tell right away they would not be the same. Yes, I do have the single push Cylinders and would like to upgrade at least to the double push.

Thanks,
Rich

When I did my 68 F100 my donor was from a 70 F100. I had the wrecking yard cut off the front I beams (was cheaper), taking every thing on the axle (akle, calipers, disk, hub, dust guard, lines). Cost only $50. It did not have Power brakes, got that from a 72 model. Plus the master cylinder, brake bias regulator, and petal assembly. While I had it apart I installed new bushing into the king pins. I used the master cylinder, and calipers as cores. Installed new rotor, calipers, pads, and lines. If you still have your org lines time to replace them, and the rear ones too. Had to make a bracket to mount the bias regulator. In other words I took every thing related to the brakes, except hard lines. This allowed me to use parts as cores if I did not want new parts. The line connections were at a different location than my 68, so I had to look through the book to find some that were longer. The local parts house had them in stock. I replaced the rear cylinder while I had every thing apart.

The hardest part was getting the drivers side kingpin apart, it was bad. Did the complete conversion in 1 weekend. Using new parts made assembly easier. Took more time to make the bias mount and run new lines. Did not want to take any chance on a brake failure, so I used new parts where ever I could. The power brakes had a bracket that extended it from the firewall and positioned the Booster higher.

Over all it was a pretty easy job. I don't think a older model will be much different. It required the use of a tubing bender and double flare tool for the brake lines. Other than a big hammer to change spindles.

There are two different 1966 Fairlane front wheel cylinders.

Either of the following part numbers of these "66" Fairlane wheel cylinders also fits 1963/72 Fairlane; 1963/70 Falcon; 1965/72 Mustang.

1 1/8" = C3OZ-2061-A - Right / C3OZ-2062-A - Left

1 3/32" = C9TZ-2061-B (replaces C6OZ-2061-A) - Right / C9TZ-2062-B (replaces C6OZ-2062-A) - Left

NOTE: The C9TZ cylinders also fit: 1964/72 F600 2WD.
