I think I read somewhere that they're high performance after market versions available that are CARB approved, but FWIW, I took mine off several months after buying my truck new in Jan 99, and I've been getting good performance ever since.
Could someone point me to instructions on how to remove the Cat converter please. Correct me if I'm wrong but isin't it illegal to remove them from gas engines? If so then why is it legal to remove them from our Diesel trucks. Is it dependent on any State regs?

You're quite correct regarding the legality, it's a FED kind of thing, not the state, but the states do the enforcing of the FED law. If you look at this pic Click for full size image you'll see that I felt my choice was removing the CAT and replacing it with a US Gear exhaust brake or risking the life of my wife and myself when descending mountain grades with my 5er in tow. Some just poke out the offending restrictive material inside and run with the CAT shell in place, and others replace it with a piece of exhaust pipe.
Are you saying then that it IS legal to toss or otherwise disable the Cat converter on diesels? Are there any issues with emissions during inspections with a disabled cat conveter on our trucks?

No, I didn't mean that at all. Big fines and maybe jail time if caught? My consideration was on the one hand SAFETY, and on the other POSSIBLE FINE, as I doubt a judge would throw an old man like me in jail!
Got it. Thanks for clearing that up for me. With my luck I'd get caught since they sometimes check exhausts when dropping off livestock at the salebarns looking for people that are running AG fuel in their trucks.
In my county it is required to have it on if it originally came with one. And mine is an early 99, and it came with one. I noticed Magnaflow makes a highflow 4 inch, but it is $379! I did find one for $230 on ebay.
It's labeled a "catalytic converter", however it's nothing more than a fine soot filter. It is very restrictive, especially once you get alot of soot trapped up in it. It is only to prevent the "feds" from seeing black particulates come out of the exhaust.
i thought that all turboed vehicles didnt need cats or mufflers because the exhaust runs through the turbo... That may sound really dumb, but i swear thats what i have been told.....
It depends on where it was made if came with one or not. My 99 came from the Kentucky plant and never had one. And yes my exhaust is still the factory exhaust the only thing I did was cut out the muffler as well. The ones that came from Canada I believe did have a CAT because of Canada's restrictive eviromental laws. So if it came with one from the factory you have to have to be legit, but if it didn't you don't need one. lucky me!
