My 02 V-10 with 10,000 miles has come down with morning smoke. what's the latest theory on what's happening. I know of another 02 that has the same problem and another concerned owner. Seems to me it must be valve seals or related and can not possibly get better on its own.
The smoke is very blue and lasts about 3 or 4 seconds, then clears up and runs great. Have been using Motorcraft 5-20 blended oil since the truck was new and have been real happy with the V-10. Runs great... But now i am worried about this much smoke every morning on a fairly new engine. thanks for any ideas because i am sure it is going to be a hassle with the dealer.
It could be that the oil is migrating past the rings and or the valves when the engine is shut down for a period of time. This can happen with some synthetic oils as well as lighter viscosity grades such as the 5W20. It might not be a bad idea to bring it to the dealers attention but I have seen this problem in a number of vehicles with no long term problems.
I have a 01' sdsc 4x4 v10 5000 miles with the same problem. I have talked to a couple of mechanics and have a friend who is a ford mechanic and the y all say it is normal start up (white smoke that is)
Have you tried switching to non-synthetic oil? Though there is dispute, a number of us thing synthetic or even blend oils can delay break in. I'm not sure if the rings are chromed or chromaloy, but the one breaks in on the engine test stand at the factory, but the other can take thousands of miles to fully seat. If the rings are not seated, you can certainly get oil in the cylinder.
