exaust/maybe other issue

i built a 331 stroker for a Mercury, and i cant find an exaust leak but it sounds like i have one could it be the timeing, or somthing like that im kinda new at this this was my 1st attemt at building a complete high out put engine

thanks for anyhelp/tips you might have

edelbrock 650 carb with stock mustang 5.0L shorty headers (ported)
MSD-6al box, Pro Billet Distributer, superconductor wires
Edelbrock-Aluminium Heads, Alum. intake, Carb, and cam

perhaps the timing is to far advanced, whats the comp ratio and what grade fuel are you running

comp ratio is about 9.5:1-10:1 should be closer to 10:1
it has old gas(1+ year old) in it probably 89 but i put in a lot of octane boster 4 or 5 cans for a little less than a half tank

i dont think the cam timing is off but i guess its possible would it be the cam or distributer, or both

could it be a lifter tick you hear? i would remove that gas, replace the fuel filter and start with some fresh fuel as well.

i got some more symtoms...
1.wet hissing sound kinda like boiling (when running or not) from cylinder#4 each time it comes up in the rotation (this seems to be the problem, but what causes it?)
2.cyl.#4 is where the exaust leak like sound comes from
3.fouled-out plugs
4.abnormaly strong smell of fuel in engine compartment

it even makes the hissing noise when its cold and just being turned over manualy
