which one?

My 87 pops out of 3rd gear all the time. I would like to get a different trans. The one in it now is a bw 4spd non od. I would like to start looking for an od manual to take its place. Whats the best trans for this. I have a bw transfercase also. 302 engine. Thanks. Theres a 5spd for a small block 2wd in the paper for 300 for the same year as mine.

Any transmission from behind a 300, 302, or 351 will work, but only the ZF has the granny gear.

Its probably hard to find a zf in 4x4 huh. If I did, it will fit my tc? I know I'll have to change driveshaft lengths but thats no big deal. Probably a new xmember too.

I think the smallblock ZF was only found behind the 351. The M5OD is a decent tranny though, if you keep fluid in it. It would most likely bolt to your TC as well.

You can find a ZF in a 4x4. It would either be behind a 300 or a 351 in an F-250 or F-350. But you will probably pay for it, unless you find a parts truck and someone doesn't know what they have.

Ford Transfer cases are all interchangeable.

Ok thanks. I dont know what I'll do. Truck runs great. A/c works etc. I hate the gearing this 4 spd has & since it pops out of 3rd gear I might as well get a better geared tranny. I really only want to spend no more than 4 or 5 hundred bucks. I guess I could start calling bone yards.

You'd be lucky to find a replacement 4 speed for that much. Boneyards where I live wanted $600 to replace my T-18. I scored one on ebay for $250 shipped.
